811 is the national call-before-you-dig phone number. Anyone who plans to dig should call 811 or go to their state 811 centers website before digging to request that the approximate location of buried utilities be marked with paint or flags so that you dont unintentionally dig into an underground utility line.
Any digging requires contacting your 811 center, either by calling 811 from anywhere in the U.S. or making your request through your state 811 centers website.
811 is a free service managed by Underground Service Alert and available to everyone. After you call, Underground Service Alert will contact PGE and other companies that have underground lines in your area. Representatives will then mark the location of their underground lines so you can avoid them and dig safely.
Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is the most commonly used utility locating equipment. GPR works by sending a radar signal into the ground being scanned, which is then bounced back to the receiver upon hitting an object. The data produced shows where an object is located.

By calling 811 (or 1-800-892-0123), contractors, excavators, homeowners, and others who may be digging can contact JULIE to notify all of the utilities: gas, electric and phone. It is then the responsibility of each utility to mark the location of its underground facilities at the excavation site.
