Load break switch,as the name suggest,is to break the flow of current. The switch is capable of disconnecting the load when full current and even the fault current ( which may be much higher) is flowing in the circuit.Similarly this switch can close to establish full load current without arcing.Disconnector is not
Load break switches are devices used to open an electrical circuit by isolating the source from the consumer. Whether they are manual, motorised or with a trip function, these devices ensure the on-load making, breaking and safety disconnection of low-voltage electrical circuits.
The load break switch is generally composed of disconnect blade, arc extinguishing chamber and operating mechanism. The arc extinguishing chamber will be made of insulating material with merits of high dielectric performance, and arc-endurances.
An isolator is an off-load device; it can only be operated when the current flowing is zero i.e., when the power supply is off. While a circuit breaker is an on-load device; it can operate perfectly when the power supply is on.
By contrast, a load-break rated disconnect is a disconnect that can open a circuit while current is going through it (while its on). Load-break rated disconnects are used to turn whole systems off, and they can get expensive which is one reason to use a non-load break rated disconnect that doesnt interrupt current.
Basically and LBS is only designed to make and break load currents. It can be closed onto a fault (has a making rating) and cannot break a fault current. A CB is designed to make and break fault currents and off course load currents.
A load break switch can make and break load currents, but cannot do the same for fault currents. A circuit breaker, on the other hand can do both i.e., make and break both load currents and fault currents.
Load break switch switches the current by mechanically moving their contacts with an appropriate speed in order to make (close) or break (open) the current. It is exposed to mechanical, thermal and dielectric stresses during switching operation.
