When it comes to TIFF, two main compression options are available–they're known as LZW or ZIP. Both ZIP and LZW are lossless compression methods. That means that no data is being lost in the compression, unlike a lossy format like JPG.
In practice, TIFF is used almost exclusively as a lossless image storage format that uses no compression at all. Most graphics programs that use TIFF do not compression. Consequently, file sizes are quite big. (Sometimes a lossless compression algorithm called LZW is used, but it is not universally supported.)
Not All Formats Have an Alpha Channel The TIFF, PNG and WebP graphics formats support the 8-bit alpha channel, whereas JPEGs have none. GIF supports a 1-bit channel, which means that an area marked as alpha can be either transparent or not but no levels in between.
TIFF format makes the background transparent To save your image with a transparency in TIFF format, enable the Save transparency checkbox. Once you have confirmed the window, your image will be saved in CMYK colour space in TIFF format with transparency.
TIFF files are typically uncompressed, so they are larger in size than JPEG files (or JPG files). However, this also means that they have higher quality images. JPEG compression means that they typically take up less space but the image quality is not as good.
TIFFs support high-resolution, multi-page design and transparency. This means they store a lot of information. PNGs can be easier to manage between programs because they're smaller files. They may be smaller than TIFFs, but they're still larger than JPEGs.
Palette or indexed color TIFF does not support alpha values in the color map. The entries are 16 bit per color component, but only R, G, B (and no Alpha component) are stored. If you try to store a TIFF with alpha in the color map, the alpha will be lost.
Disadvantages of TIFF files. Detail and resolution lead to TIFFs being quite large files. ... Their size makes them difficult to share or send to contacts or clients. Their high quality makes them a poor choice for website design, since detailed images can slow a website's loading speed.
How to compress TIF/TIFF files in four simple steps the NXPowerLite Desktop TIFF compressor software. Drag your TIFF file onto the NXPowerLite icon. Hit the 'Optimize' button to reduce file size. NXPowerLite will compress and deliver you a smaller image.
Four types of baseline TIFF images are available: bilevel (black and white), gray scale, palette (i.e., indexed), and RGB (i.e., true color). RGB images may store up to 16.7 million colors.
