EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) files store important data about photographs. Almost all digital cameras create these data files each time you snap a new picture. An EXIF file holds all the information about the image itself such as the exposure level, where you took the photo, and any settings you used.
A JPEG file also has a lot of metadata in each file containing auxiliary information about the image. On an average, this kind of metadata occupies 16% of size of the JPEG file.
Depending on the device, this could include location coordinates, date, time, device model and manufacturer, and settings used to take the image. If you post that image online as is, snoopers have full access to that data, causing privacy issues for the owner and subjects of the image.
Fortunately for you, not all your photos or videos will contain location metadata, because it may have been wiped for you.
On a Windows PC using File Explorer right-click on the file you want to see the data for. You will see a window pop up with various options. Click on Properties and then on Details. This will bring up the EXIF data for that photo.
How to edit and remove EXIF data Right-click an image file you have saved. Select Properties. Select the Details tab. Click Remove Properties and personal information. Select whether you want to create a back up with all possible metadata removed, or simply remove the data you specify without making a copy.
How to access and view photo metadata Locate and right-click the intended digital image file. Select Properties Click the Details tab at the top of the popup window. Now simply scroll down through the resulting window until you find the metadata section you require.
For example, if the image is a photograph taken by a digital camera, the camera typically generates metadata about the camera and the photos settings, including aperture, resolution, focal length, shutter speed, ISO speed, camera brand and model, date and time when the image was created, and the GPS location where it
Metadata is data about data. Every single digital artifact has it. It describes the who, what, when, where, how, and sometimes even, why, for any document, video, photo, or sound clip. This information comes in handy sometimes, like when youre flipping through old pictures by date, or by location.
For example, if the image is a photograph taken by a digital camera, the camera typically generates metadata about the camera and the photos settings, including aperture, resolution, focal length, shutter speed, ISO speed, camera brand and model, date and time when the image was created, and the GPS location where it
