A common question in many of the trainings I teach is: Should I mark the required fields in a form? If most fields in the form are required, should we still mark them? The short answer is: yes. Its best to have such a specification next to every single required field instead of just having a message such as, All fields are required, or All fields are required unless otherwise indicated at the top of the page or no message at all. Most of the time, people dont read small or even large font instructions at the top of a form. When they see a form, they often just jump into filling it. Even when people read such instructions, they might forget the instructions if they happen to be interrupted while they fill out the form. You might think that it will be more efficient to just mark the optional fields, since there are fewer. Unfortunately, to determine that a field is required, people will have to scan the entire form and check for any optional fields. That is not going to happe

On the page layout Click on Setup. Go to Quick Find and enter Object. Choose the object. Under the Page Layouts section, Click on Edit on the page layout that you use on the object. Click the wrench icon beside the custom field that you will make required. Select the Required checkbox. Click on Ok, then click on Save.
Summary: Using an asterisk to mark required fields is an easy way to improve the usability of your forms.
After inserting a form field, click the Properties button to get its properties dialog, which is different from the one for content controls. Put the fields name in the Bookmark box -- that name is what the macro will use to identify the field. In the Exit dropdown, select the name of the macro (MustFillIn).
Takeaway: If you want users to scan a form quickly, put labels above the fields. The layout will be easier to scan because the eye will move straight down the page. However, if you want users to read carefully, put labels to the left of the fields.
How to indicate a required field Provide the required text in the label. Provide a graphic * image in the label with appropriate alt text. Providing a star (asterisk) symbol. Use of color to identify if a form control is required. Providing HTML5 and ARIA required attributes.
Summary: Using an asterisk to mark required fields is an easy way to improve the usability of your forms. Only marking optional fields makes it difficult for people to fill out the form.
Contact form, booking appointments, booking tickets etc are some examples. In every form we observe mandatory fields. When a mandatory field is available in the form, it means user should fill that field without fail.
When you make a field required, people must enter an answer to the field in order to submit their entry. When someone tries to submit an entry without filling out a required field, we highlight the problematic fields and display an error message to let them know the field is required.
Label Position: The best position for placing a form label is above an input field because users are not forced to look separately at the label and the input field. This dramatically decreases the number of eye fixations and results in a faster completion time. For mobile devices always use a label at the top.
Fields marked with * are mandatory Using an asterisk (*) symbol content authors notify mandatory field. This is said to be one of the accessible modes of identifying a mandatory field, however this method also will be a problem with screen readers in certain times.
