This band is commonly referred to as the Victor or VHF band. The frequency range is from 118 MHz to 136 MHz. The only authorized use of this band is for aviation. The FAA controls and assigns all frequencies within this sub-band.
The Family Radio Server (FRS) authorizes 22 channels in the 462 MHz and 467 MHz range, and it is available without a license.
The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has three primary frequency bands designated for unlicensed operation. Unlicensed means the operator of the radios does not need to file directly with the FCC to use the radio. The three frequency bands used for this in the U.S. are the 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz.
Typically, a 1-watt walkie-talkie with an average number of obstructions in its path yields about a mile of coverage. Range increases by approximately 30-50 percent if you double the power.
In the United States, FM stations are now limited to an effective radiated power of 100,000 watts. However, this limit was not in effect in the early days of FM and some of the older FM stations have been allowed to keep their ERPs above 100,000 watts.
Even if a two-way VHF/UHF radio operates solely within the amateur frequencies, the operator is required to have an amateur license to operate the device and must otherwise comply with all applicable rules.
The minimum power for a standard FM broadcast station which a construction permit applicant may request is 100 watts (0.100 kilowatts).
You may apply for a GMRS license if you are 18 years or older and not a representative of a foreign government. If you receive a license, any family member, regardless of age, can operate GMRS stations and units within the licensed system.
Unlicensed operation on the AM and FM radio broadcast bands is permitted for some extremely low powered devices covered under Part 15 of the FCCs rules. On FM frequencies, these devices are limited to an effective service range of approximately 200 feet (61 meters).
If an ERP of 100 Watt is used, it is very likely that 20 kilometers of range will be docHubed because a 100 Watt ERP is able to propagate a strong signal as far as 20 kilometers.
