After watching this video, you will know how to insert footnotes and endnotes in Word and how to change the style of these notes. Inserting a footnote is quite easy. We click into text, at the position where we want to insert the reference to the footnote. Then we go to the References tab and click on Insert Footnotes. As we can see, Word will automatically insert a line at the end of the page and also the number 1 since it is our first footnote. Here we can now write our referencing text. When we go back to the content, we can see that the referencing number is also inserted where we first placed our cursor. Of course, we can insert more footnotes on a single page. Word will simply make room for them at the end of the page. Inserting an endnote works the same way. We again click into the text, where we want the reference to the endnote to be inserted. Each footnote should appear at the bottom of the page that includes its numbered in-text reference. For note numbers in the text, use superscript. Indent the first line of each note half an inch like a paragraph in the main text. Use a short line (or rule) to separate footnotes from the main text.
Footnotes should not be longer than one paragraph. All footnotes should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they appear in your paper. Footnotes can either be placed on the bottom of the page in which they appear, or they can be placed in consecutive order on a separate page after the reference page.
Footnotes are placed at the bottom of the page on which the reference appears. Endnotes are similar to footnotes but instead of being added to the bottom of each page they are grouped together at the end of the document. We use the term Notes to refer to a footnote or an endnote.
Footnotes appear at the bottom, or foot, of the page. They begin two double spaces below the text. Footnotes are single spaced, but you must double space between them. If a note continues on the next page, add a solid line across that page two spaces below the text and continue the note two spaces below the line.
A footnote is indicated with a superscript numeral (like this1) within the text that corresponds to the same numeral at the bottom of the page, which is followed by the reference or additional information. The footnote should be included directly following the text it pertains to, usually after any punctuation.
