Regardless of the type of foundation, the majority of American log cabin foundations are built with some form of concrete, either poured, block or precast. Some types of foundations used for log cabin homes are slab, pier, crawlspace and basement. They all have advantages and disadvantages.
Ensuring you have a solid foundation for your log cabin. They are designed to withstand strong forces, but are only as strong on which the base they stand on. Some builders provide base/ foundations that are made with a slight incline of 2 degrees to help with drainage. This will put slight strains on your log cabin.
In most cases a 100mm thick concrete slab is an ideal base for your log cabin providing the ground is reasonably level and firm.
Step 1: Mark out the area and dig to approximately 150-200mm depth. Step 2: Once the ground is level, use compacted hardcore at around 150mm thick. Step 3: Use 100 x 25mm timber to form the boxing for your base. Place the timber on the ground and adjust to the height you want your concrete.
If you want the footings to be level, dig your holes for the footings and use forms such as the cardboard tube-type forms. If your footings are 18-inch, then get some 24- or 36-inch stakes. Drive the stakes into the center of the hole with the forms in place.
Pad foundations are sometimes referred to as pad-stone foundations or concrete piers. The pad foundation is the cheapest form of foundation that you can use for your log cabin.
