Drywall also gives log home owners more decorating options by providing a simple, flat surface for adding color and hanging artwork or photographs. Like logs, drywall also absorbs some noise. Another option for non-log walls is plaster, which is simply a thin coat of cement.
Pad foundations are sometimes referred to as pad-stone foundations or concrete piers. The pad foundation is the cheapest form of foundation that you can use for your log cabin.
Regardless of the type of foundation, the majority of American log cabin foundations are built with some form of concrete, either poured, block or precast. Some types of foundations used for log cabin homes are slab, pier, crawlspace and basement. They all have advantages and disadvantages.
In most cases a 100mm thick concrete slab is an ideal base for your log cabin providing the ground is reasonably level and firm.
We have in fact tried and tested this as a modification to our design and can confirm that it is not a good idea as can lead to the logs being unable to tighten down upon one another to close any gaps. We therefore do not advise plasterboarding the walls as being a good idea for your log cabin.
Step 1: Mark out the area and dig to approximately 150-200mm depth. Step 2: Once the ground is level, use compacted hardcore at around 150mm thick. Step 3: Use 100 x 25mm timber to form the boxing for your base. Place the timber on the ground and adjust to the height you want your concrete.
Ensuring you have a solid foundation for your log cabin. They are designed to withstand strong forces, but are only as strong on which the base they stand on. Some builders provide base/ foundations that are made with a slight incline of 2 degrees to help with drainage. This will put slight strains on your log cabin.
Doors / Windows: Gaps appearing above your doors or above the windows. This is easily solved by raising the door or window frame and then inserting a packer the length of the frame. The gap will then be hidden behind the fascia.
