Properly built footings are essential to a buildings strength and durability. The ICF footings are responsible for distributing all the loads from the building to the ground. Appropriate construction of ICF footings is the first step in ensuring a building is structurally strong and durable.
Another downside of ICF foundations is their polystyrene shell. Polystyrene is a petroleum by-product, and there are a slew of environmental reasons to avoid it. The good news is, there are a few options you can use to avoid using polystyrene in your ICFs the most popular being Durisol ICFs.
ICFs are used to construct above and below-grade walls of a building or home. However, only below-grade ICF walls require waterproofing and proper drainage systems.
Wall Footing Thickness. The minimum reinforced concrete footing thickness will be 6 inches or 1-1/2 times the length of the footing projection from the foundation wall, whichever is greater.

Under every house is a foundation, and under most foundations are footings. Most of the time we take footings for granted, and usually we can: For typical soils, a common 16- or 20-inch-wide footing can more than handle the relatively light weight of an ordinary house.
As it turns out, common extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation like Dow Styrofoam or Owens Corning Foamular has a compressive strength of 25 psi. Thats more than many soils that are routinely used to support a footing and a house.
1809.8 Plain concrete footings. The edge thickness of plain concrete footings supporting walls of other than light-frame construction shall not be less than 8 inches (203 mm) where placed on soil or rock.
To determine the size of the footing, a simple formula is used: Structural Load (lbs) / Soil Capacity (psf) = Footing Surface Area Required (sq. ft.)
In general, the width of your footing should be no less than 24, but wider footings may be required dependent upon the design requirements for your application. A 24 width will ensure that you have sufficient room to place either the 6 or 8 Advantage ICF blocks.
