now just like using the styles will enable us to populate the table of contents automatically if we want to do the same with our lists of figures and lists of tables then we need to use the captioning tool to automate the labeling of those figures and tables so in this particular document ive already got some labels just written in normal text underneath the images but this will work equally as well if you dont have the labels in there automatically the only difference will be that you need to select the image before you do this rather than clicking your insert point in front of the label to add the caption we go to the references ribbon and choose insert caption this particular one has defaulted to thinking its a table but i need this to be a figure so im going to switch that on the label there to be a figure now because this is the first time ive done it sometimes it doesnt automatically pick up the um the chapter numbering when weve got when we want that to be part of the ca

In written reports, titles are not used on figures or tables; instead, the information is placed in a caption. Captions for tables are placed above the table (typically left aligned), and captions for figures are placed below the figure.
Labelling Tables and Figures Figure captions are generally placed below the figures, while table captions must be placed above the tables. This is because we generally read tables from the top down, and therefore want to see the caption at the top.
Typically, boldface or underscore the word Figure or Table and the associated number in the caption, then present the caption in plain text with only the initial letter of the caption and any proper names in the caption capitalized (see example below).
Tables should be labeled with a number preceding the table title; tables and figures are labeled independently of one another. Tables should also have lines demarcating different parts of the table (title, column headers, data, and footnotes if present).
Captions A figure caption is centered under the figure; a table caption is centered above the table (if a caption is more than one line, make it left justified). A Figure and its caption should appear on the same page. All captions should start with a capitalized word and end with a period.
Tables, figures, illustrations, and other such items should be identified with the word Table, Figure, or other appropriate descriptor, and include a title and/or caption. The title or caption must be included in the List of Tables, List of Figures, or other list.
