There are so many different kinds of date labels. Creme fraiche. I dont even know what creme fraiche is. Oh thats something else. It can be REALLY confusing to know what all these labels indicate. A lot of times you just throw away food thats past whatever date you see. But youre actually throwing away tons of perfectly good food because many times, these dates dont mean what you think they mean. Say you have a carton of eggs with a label that says sell by January 1st. If theyre in your fridge past that date, you might throw them away thinking theyre probably bad. But sell by is just a label for retailers to know when its time to take food off their shelves, so they can manage their inventory. It actually doesnt tell you anything about the safety of those eggs. And thats not the only misleading label on your food. Part of the problem is that there are way too many labels to begin with. Walmart, one of the biggest food retailers in the country, surveyed its label supplier

The date of manufacture is the date on which the food becomes the product it is supposed to be. The use by or the expiry date refers to the date after which the food cannot be consumed, therefore the food must be consumed before the date.
A date label on a food should indicate the last date where the food maintains peak quality and flavor. Date labels are meant to reflect quality not food safety. A Best-if-Used-By Date indicates to the consumer that the product may not taste or perform as expected but is safe to be used or consumed
A Best if Used By/Before date indicates when a product will be of best flavor or quality. It is not a purchase or safety date. A Sell-By date tells the store how long to display the product for sale for inventory management. It is not a safety date.
The date on which the item was first produced or created.
Read these codes as MMDDYY, where MM refers to the month, DD refers to the date, and YY refers to the year. This is one of the more common codes that youll see on food items. For example, 121518 would be read as December 15, 2018.
What Does Manufacturing Date Actually Mean? A manufacturing date on your supplements basically addresses the date on which the supplements you are consuming was bottled. Commonly, most of the supplements are treated as stable to consume for at least two to three years from the date of manufacturing.
The Expiration date (exp) printed on the label is the last date a product should be ingested. With proper storage, the product will remain fully potent until this date. The Manufacturing date (mfg) printed on the label is the date the product was produced in compliance with Good Manufacturing (GMP) regulations.
As a rough rule, two months in should be a safe amount of time to broach the subject, Stott said. But every relationship is different, so if it feels right earlier, go for it.
