Joining attributes in one table to another In the table of contents, right-click the layer or table you want to join, point to Joins and Relates, then click Join. Click the What do you want to join to this layer? Click the field on which the join will be based. Choose the table to join to the layer or table.
Join by location, or spatial join, uses spatial associations between the layers involved to append fields from one layer to another. Spatial joins are different from attribute and relationship class joins in that they are not dynamic and require the results to be saved to a new output layer.
Spatial Join, as the name implies, joins two feature classes to create a new table. It does not split line or polygon features based on the portion that is inside another polygon, unlike the Intersect tool. This means that you cannot create a tabulation table that has AREA and PERCENTAGE.
A spatial join involves matching rows from the Join Features to the Target Features based on their relative spatial locations. By default, all attributes of the join features are appended to attributes of the target features and copied over to the output feature class.
When performing an attribute join, the joined fields are dynamically added to the existing table. Field propertiessuch as aliases, visibility, and number formattingare maintained when a join is added or removed.
A spatial join is similar to a join in a database program, except that instead of joining two tables based on a common field you join them based on geographic location.
For example, using a search radius of 100 meters with the spatial relationship Within a distance will join feature within 100 meters of a target feature. For the three Within a distance relationships, if no value is specified for Search Radius, a distance of 0 is used.
Select the features, choose the feature and attributes to preserve, and click Merge. In the Contents pane, confirm that the layer you are editing is selectable and editable. On the Edit tab, in the Features group, click Modify . Click the Merge tool. Click the Existing Feature tab in the tool pane. Click Select.
