The Tax Cut and Jobs Act eliminated the personal exemption for tax years 2018 through 2025. So, as an example, if youre a single filer with $10,000 worth of deductions, itemizing on your 2022 taxes wont save you anything because the personal exemption is no longer available and the standard deduction is higher.
One of the greatest changes brought about by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) is the elimination of many personal itemized deductions. Starting in 2018 and continuing through 2025, taxpayers will not be able to deduct expenses such as union dues, investment fees, or hobby expenses.
In order to claim itemized deductions, you must file your income taxes using Form 1040 and list your itemized deductions on Schedule A: Enter your expenses on the appropriate lines of Schedule A. Add them up. Copy the total amount to the second page of your Form 1040.
