The Ham Radio General Class exam contains 35 multiple-choice questions, which are split into ten main categories. Commissions Rules (5 questions) Operating Procedures (5 questions) Radio Wave Propagation (3 questions) Amateur Radio Practices (5 questions) Electrical Principles (3 questions)
The following licenses are issued for the holders lifetime: Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit. Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit-Limited Use. Marine Radio Operator Permit. General Radiotelephone Operator License. GMDSS Radio Operators License. Restricted GMDSS Radio Operators License.
Ham requires at least a basic license and test that might take you 2-3 days, including study time. More advanced Ham licenses require more studying. Learning and using the equipment is also harder in Ham than the others.
To pass the Ham Radio Technician exam, you must answer 26 out of 35 questions correctly, which is a score of 74%. You will be immediately notified of your score once you finish the exam.
The entry level Technician License Exam requires around 10 hours of study for most people. The Technician and General License exams each have 35 questions, and the Amateur Extra has 50. In order to pass the each test, you must get at least a 74%.
The license term for a new or renewed grant is 10 years and a copy must be kept with the aircrafts station records. You may file for renewal beginning 90 days prior to the expiration date of your license.
You can apply for a GMRS license online, or by filing FCC Form 605. The FCC sets license filing fees annually, and licenses are granted for 10 years.
Applying for a GMRS license is easy, does not require any kind of test, and it takes only a few minutes. A license does cost $35, but covers your whole family and is good for 10 years.
The Ham Test Online web site estimates that it will take 10 hours to study for the Technician exam, 20 hours to study for the General exam, and 30 hours to study for the Amateur Extra exam.
How to Obtain a License. Submit FCC Form 605 along with the appropriate Proof of Passing Certificates to apply. (You do NOT need to submit FCC Form 159 (fee processing form) or any fees.) Many Commercial Operator License Examination Managers (COLEMs) file these documents for applicants who test with them.
