Ill be explaining the concept of the 180 degree line, sometimes referred to as the 180 degree rule. This is a relatively simple concept, but one that trips up a lot of first time filmmakers. Im going to explain it in a minute with a scene from Casablanca, but I could use almost any scene ever shot in Hollywood. The rule is that when actors are arranged in a scene, we imagine that theres a straight line between them running across like this, running through the middle of the actors from side to side, and the camera has to say on one side of that line. So the camera has 180 degrees of movement and can get closer or further away and cut back and forth between the actors. But it never crosses this line. The reason for this is that the camera does cross the line, then the screen direction of the actors would change. In this case from Casablanca, Humphrey Bogart is always looking to screen left, and Joy Page is always looking to screen right if the camera cut to an angle behind t
