Headers and footers generally contain document information, such as the file name, author, date created, page numbering and the like. This information is repeated on each page and thus enables the reader to easily navigate the document.
Select where you want a new section to begin. Go to Layout Breaks. Choose the type of section break you want: Next Page Section break starts the new section on the following page.
Go to Insert Header or Footer. Choose from a list of standard headers or footers, go to the list of Header or Footer options, and select the header or footer that you want. Or, create your own header or footer by selecting Edit Header or Edit Footer. When youre done, select Close Header and Footer or press Esc.
And finally, to create the chapter headers themselves, all you need to do is: Open the header in the first chapter. Go to References Captions Cross-reference. Select Heading from the menu as your reference type. Pick the relevant chapter title and click Insert. Repeat for each chapter of your document.
Start page numbering later in your document Go to Insert Header or Footer Edit Header or Edit Footer. Select Different First Page. In the header or footer area, you should see a label on the first page that says First Page Header. Select Close Header and Footer or press Esc to exit.
Use headers and footers to add a title, date, or page numbers to every page in a document.
Select Layout Breaks Next Page. Double-click the header or footer on the first page of the new section. Click Link to Previous to turn it off and unlink the header or footer from the previous section. Note: Headers and footers are linked separately.
Change or delete a header or footer on a single page Double-click the first page header or footer area. Check Different First Page to see if its selected. If not: Select Different First Page. Add your new content into the header or footer. Select Close Header and Footer or press Esc to exit.
A header is the top margin of each page, and a footer is the bottom margin of each page. Headers and footers are useful for including material that you want to appear on every page of a document such as your name, the title of the document, or page numbers.
