Thus experts generally advise introducing formula slowly, gradually replacing breastfeeding sessions with formula feeding. One method is to replace one nursing session per week with a formula feeding session. Start by giving your baby one bottle of formula at around the same time each day.
Although its safe to combine your breast milk with formula in one bottle if prepared correctly, lactation experts often recommend giving breast milk and formula separately. That way, none of the breast milk will be wasted if your little one doesnt finish up the bottle.
To begin the transition with a 4-ounce bottle, you may mix equal parts of the old formula with the new formula for two to three days, then gradually provide only the new formula. If you are starting with a larger size bottle, you may transition more slowly.
You can start supplementing at any time. However, doctors and lactation consultants recommend waiting until your baby is at least 3 weeks old (if possible) to start supplementing with formula, so that your milk supply and breastfeeding routine has adequate time to get established.
If you are breastfeeding but want to introduce formula, its best to gradually reduce the amount of breastfeeds. This will help your baby get used to the change and stop your breasts becoming sore (from being too full of milk) and leaking.
Start weaning by replacing one breast milk feeding a day with a bottle of infant formula (for your child younger than 12 months old) or with a cup of plain whole cows milk or fortified unsweetened soy beverage (for your child 12 months or older). Continue to replace more breast milk feedings over time.
Slowly Drop Feeding Sessions If possible, give yourself two or three weeks or more to make the transition from breastfeeding to formula, and start by replacing one breastfeeding session with a bottle feedingideally one that your baby will miss the least.
