In October 1984, the faculty voted to make standardized testing, such as the SAT and the ACT, optional for all students applying to Bates. For the Class of 2026, the middle 50% of those who submitted scores had ranges of: SAT Evidence Based Reading and Writing 710-740. SAT Math 650-710.
Bates admissions is extremely selective with an acceptance rate of 14%. Students that get into Bates have an average SAT score between 1385-1460 or an average ACT score of 30-32.
Is your high school GPA good enough for Bates? The average high school GPA for admitted students at Bates is 3.88 on a 4.0 scale. (You can calculate your high school a GPA here.) This is a very competitive GPA, and Bates is clearly accepting students at the top of their high school class.

Bates academic requirements are intense but youre going to a great school so its worth it. Education is geared towards both getting a job, preparing you for entry tests to graduate school and learning for its own sake. The professors are very dedicated to their students.
Bates College SAT Score Analysis (New 1600 SAT) Theres no absolute SAT requirement at Bates College, but they really want to see at least a 1290 to have a chance at being considered.
The acceptance rate at Bates College is 17.8%. For every 100 applicants, only 18 are admitted. This means the school is extremely selective. Meeting their GPA requirements and SAT/ACT requirements is very important to getting past their first round of filters and proving your academic preparation.
Average GPA: 3.88 The average GPA at Bates College is 3.88. This makes Bates College Extremely Competitive for GPAs. (Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA.
With a GPA of 3.88, Bates College requires you to be near the top of your class, and well above average. Youll need mostly As, ideally with several AP or IB classes to help show your preparation at a college level. If youre a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change from this point on.
To have the best shot of getting in, you should aim for the 75th percentile, with a 1460 SAT or a 32 ACT. You should also have a 3.88 GPA or higher. If your GPA is lower than this, you need to compensate with a higher SAT/ACT score.
