FM broadcasting is the method of radio broadcasting that uses frequency modulation (FM). Invented in 1933 by American engineer Edwin Armstrong, wide-band FM is used worldwide to transmit high-fidelity sound over broadcast radio.
Better sound quality: DAB and internet radio both offer higher audio quality compared to analog radio.
Digital radio has clearer reception and better sound quality than AM and FM. It can also provide on-screen information such as song and artist information, weather forecasts and news headlines, and the ability to pause and rewind. Tuning is also easier, you can simply scroll to the station name.
FM, which stands for Frequency Modulation, has better sound quality due to higher bandwidth. Also, the way the audio is encoded for FM makes it less sensitive to interference from electrical activity from storms or electrical devices than AM.
In most FM implementations, from 96 to 128 kbps of capacity is available. High-fidelity audio requires only 48 kbps so there is ample capacity for additional channels, which HD Radio refers to as multicasting.
All of the main BBC Radio stations are broadcast online at 320 kbit/s in the efficient AAC-LC codec: for comparison, better than FM is said to require only 56-96 kbit/s in AACLC, so the broadcasts are clearly of higher sound quality.
128kbps is the defacto industry standard. Stations use this as the benchmark for what listeners expect in terms of audio quality. Even hand-held recording devices like the Zoom use 128kbps as default. 192kbps to 320kbps are higher bitrates.
Radio stations use a variety of sophisticated processors or software to maintain consistent loudness. Many of these split the audio into multiple frequency bands and ride gain on each individually. This often makes the quieter sounds more audible.
