Enrolling a deed poll means that youre putting your new name on public record. You must apply to the Royal Courts of Justice to get an enrolled deed poll using the deed poll process. It costs 42.44. You can only enrol your own name change if youre 18 or over.
There is no law which states that a deed poll must be drawn up by a solicitor, in the same way that its possible to draw up certain other legal documents on your own, such as wills.
If you are over 18 years of age there are two ways in which you can change your name: Make an unenrolled deed poll, a simple legal statement that you have changed your name. Apply for an enrolled deed poll, this means that youre putting your new name on public record.
You can change your name on your passport with one of the following documents: a deed poll. a statutory declaration. an affidavit.
To do this, search by name in The Gazette where all enrolled changes of name by deed poll have been announced since 1914. If you find an entry in The Gazette go to Step 2; if you do not find an entry we will not have a record of the change and you may need to speak to a solicitor if you require legal proof of identity.
Go to the Clerk of the Courts office in the appropriate county, if there is not an online database. Some counties have public computer terminals you can use to look up information on filed cases. If you see a name change or divorce case for the person, ask the court to get the court file for you.
If you have applied for an adult Deed Poll, you should sign your Deed in both your old signature and your new signature at the places indicated near the bottom of the page. Your witness should also sign your Deed at the place indicated, and also add their address and occupation.
If the judge approves your request to change your name, you will get a Decree. Thats the document you will use to change your name on all your legal documents. Youll need a certified copy of this signed Decree to change your IDs and other legal documents.
