Gary with MacMost.com explains that it is not possible to directly edit a PDF on a Mac using Preview. Instead, you can annotate, highlight, export, and rearrange pages in the PDF. Editing the content of the document requires editing the source document and not the PDF itself. Some actions, like marking up the document, are possible within the realm of Markup.
