in this short video well look at how to put boxes and arrows and comments directly onto a chart in Excel this is a common problem that many people face lets have a go at inserting a shape so lets just pick an arrow the common problem we draw an arrow on to what we think is the chart and we go ok I want to highlight something there so then we go to move or copy the chart and we find that its sitting to the side that Im just going to undo that what we need to do is a very simple solution but I get caught out myself so what we have to do is actually click the chart see how the chartres highlight it and that menu comes up Ill click outside onto the worksheet the menu disappears come back sharp tools comes up now I can insert my shape Ill do exactly what appears to be exactly the same thing but because the chart is highlighted is actually now embedded into it moves across so I can copy it across the same thing applies if I wanted to add a text box Im outside the chart now see is no

Click the Insert tab, and then click the arrow next to Chart. Click a chart type, and then double-click the chart you want to add. When you insert a chart into Word or PowerPoint, an Excel worksheet opens that contains a table of sample data.
Create a chart Click anywhere in the data for which you want to create a chart. Select Insert Charts and the chart type you want. On the menu that opens, select the option you want. To edit the chart (titles, legends, data labels), select the Chart tab and then select Format.
Add a drawing to a document Click in your document where you want to create the drawing. On the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click Shapes. When you find the shape you want to insert, double-click to insert it automatically, or click and drag to draw it in your document.
In Word, click where you want to insert the chart. On the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click Chart. In the Insert Chart dialog box, click a chart, and then click OK. Enter your data into the spreadsheet that automatically opens with the chart.

In the worksheet, click the cell that contains the title or data label text that you want to change. Edit the existing contents, or type the new text or value, and then press ENTER. The changes you made automatically appear on the chart.
Select Range to Create a Graph from Workbook Data Once the text is highlighted you can select a graph (which Excel refers to as chart). Click the Insert tab and click Recommended Charts on the toolbar. Then click the type of graph you wish to use.
