The dots on a guitar fretboard are called fret markers or inlays. These dots are to help guitarists find their way around the fretboard.
These inlays are usually made out of mother-of-pearl or similar materials. You can see that these block inlays follow the same pattern with an extra marker on the 1st fret (but not the 13th fret).
The dots on a guitar fretboard are helpful indicators for musicians to know which notes they are playing on the fretboard. The dots follow the same pattern for the majority of guitars, so once youve learned to work with this pattern on one guitar, you will find them helpful on almost every guitar you pick up.
Fret markers are fretboard inlays that are functional as well as decorative; they mark off specific frets in order to visually indicate neck position to the performer. On guitars and basses, fret markers are usually found on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 15th, 17th, and 19th fret.
A fret marker may be as simple as a small dot or as elaborate as an intricate artwork encompassing the entire fretboard, and may be made from a wide range of materials: woods, plastics, clay, metals, mother-of-pearl, abalone, semi-precious stones, and more.
The short answer is that the dots or markers are there to show the positions on your fretboard. These markers make it easy for you to locate these positions when you are playing the guitar. If your instrument doesnt have these markers, it can be difficult to play in position especially for beginners.
Also called block markers, this refers to fret markers inlaid into a guitars or basss fingerboard that are rectangular block shaped instead of the more common circular dot markers.
Made from vintage correct cellulose nitrate material. Manufactured by Mazzucchelli, the original Italian factory that supplied Gibson in the 1950s. Retrospec inlays are 0.070 in thickness, with the pattern running all the way through to allow for sanding.
The black dots on the chord diagram represent the notes that make up the chord. They tell you which frets and strings to place your fingers on. Sometimes there are numbers inside the dots to indicate which fingers to use on each of the frets.
