A layer of quantum dots is sandwiched between layers of electron-transporting and hole-transporting organic materials. An applied electric field causes electrons and holes to move into the quantum dot layer, where they are captured in the quantum dot and recombine, emitting photons.
Quantum dots are semiconductor nanoparticles that glow a particular color after being illuminated by light. The color they glow depends on the size of the nanoparticle. When the quantum dots are illuminated by UV light, some of the electrons receive enough energy to break free from the atoms.
In particular, the technological benefits of QD-based µ-LED displays include better colour accuracy, higher colour saturation, higher contrast ratio and higher peak brightness than those of conventional LCDs36.
An emerging technology called Quantum Dot enhances flat-panel LED displays, commercial TVs and curved widescreen monitors, revealing many more colors and adding the necessary brightness to take full advantage of technologies like High Dynamic Range (HDR).
Quantum Dots on LEDs promise to change the display and lighting industries by replacing broad-emitting, bulky phosphors through efficient nano-sized particles, resulting in higher efficiency and better color for displays and lighting.
QDs can be used in solar cells as well as LEDs due to their broad excitation band and narrow emission spectra.
Quantum dot (QD) blinking is characterized by switching between an “on” state and an “off” state, and a power-law distribution of on and off times with exponents from 1.0 to 2.0. The origin of blinking behavior in QDs, however, has remained a mystery.
Effect of Size The size of a quantum dot is inversely proportional to the band gap energy level, and therefore alters the frequency light emitted and has an effect on the color. Smaller dots emit higher energy light that is bluer in color, whereas larger dots emit lower energy red light.
Quantum dots are fluorophore nanocrystals whose excitation and emission is fundamentally different than traditional organic fluorophores.
HDR produces great peak brightness in the brightest areas of an image, but quantum dots allow for even more brightness to be displayed while preserving picture details.
