With the blank document open, go first to Layout. Then, on the Margins dropdown menu, select Normal for 1-inch margins on all sides, top, bottom, left, and right. Next, lets set alignment and line spacing by clicking on the Home tab. Then in the Paragraph grouping, select Align Left. Although in-text citations are fairly common in legal memos and factums, footnotes are the preferred method of citation used at law school. There are two types of footnotes: Citation Footnotes: directly support the authors argument and point the reader to the source which is being quoted or referred to.
Footnotes should be placed on the same page as their accompanying text. Footnote numbers are placed in superscript, usually at the end of the sentence. If you are referring to a word, place the footnote number directly after the word.
Instead, in the case of footnotes, indicate the page number on which the footnote is found, followed first by a space and then by n. and the footnote number. Note that there is no comma between the page number and the n. and no space between the n. and the footnote number.
Footnotes or endnotes can be used to add extra information that doesnt fit into your main text, but theyre not needed for citations. If you need to cite a lot of sources at the same point in the text, though, placing these citations in a note can be a good way to avoid cluttering your text.
