Companions have unlimited ammo for their default weapon. Their default weapon is glued to them and cannot be removed. Any weapon you provide them with requires you to also provide ammo. Theyll scavenge weapons and ammo based on criteria that its better for them than what they have.
Settlers wont take things out of the Workshop inventory, but they will take things out of other containers.
for companions their default weapon has infinite ammo but any weapon you give them does not. all i know for settlers is that if you steal an npcs ammo they usually switch to melee. Companions default weapons have unlimited ammo. If you wish for them to use another weapon you have to provide the ammo for that weapon.
Every NPC in Fallout 4 runs out of ammo almost instantly after a few shots. Every NPC, including turrets, run out of ammo after a few shots and instantly switch to melee. Its annoying to just see a BOS soldier with power armor charge up to an enemy with just their fists.
Settlers can be equipped with a gun by the player character and they will not consume any ammo, but in order to use that weapon, they need to have at least 1 (one) ammo in their inventory of the type that the equipped weapon uses.
Settlers wont take things out of the Workshop inventory, but they will take things out of other containers.
They will grab weapons from the workbench during an attack but it requires the ammo there too And theyll take all the ammo. As for clothing armor youll need to equip them if you want them to have better stuff.
Automatic ones, minigun, gatling laser. But youll also have to give ammo to them. Dont give them explosive weapons unless you like being blown up.
The easiest solution is to store anything of true value to you at Home Base in Diamond City (in particular any legendary weapons, ammo and fusion cores). Settlers cannot go there, so they cant take anything. You can also use the Mechanists lair as a massive storage dump and personal base if you want.
Provided they can path through to your custom containers, yeah, they can. Settlers, and even enemies that attack your settlement. Any NPC that is able to equip items can steal your stuff. Even power armor can be stolen if you leave it, with a fusion core, somewhere they can docHub.
