When I say the word tree, you probably think about a tree. I can show you the word tree, a picture of a tree, and they would have a pretty similar effect. All three, the word, the pronunciation, the image will evoke the concept of a tree. Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure wrote that the sign is the whole that results from the association of the signifier with the signified. The signifier being the form a sign takes and the signified is the concept it represents. The process from the signifier to the signified is called signification. Charles Sanders Peirce has a bit more of an elaborate definition. His little drawing looks like this: the representamen is the form which a sign takes, such as an icon of a tree, and that can lead to either the object to which the sign refers, or the interpretant - the idea or interpretation that takes place in ones mind. He classifies signs into three types: Symbol, Icon, and Index. To determine if a sign is an icon, index or symbol, we take a look

Indexing, broadly, refers to the use of some benchmark indicator or measure as a reference or yardstick. In finance and economics, indexing is used as a statistical measure for tracking economic data such as inflation, unemployment, gross domestic product (GDP) growth, productivity, and market returns.
An indexed image consists of an image matrix and a colormap. A colormap is a c-by-3 matrix of data type double with values in the range [0, 1]. Each row of the colormap specifies the red, green, and blue components of a single color. The pixel values in the image matrix are direct indices into the colormap.
Indexed color means that the set of colors in the image, its palette, is stored in a color table. Each pixel in the image contains a reference (or index) to a table cell containing the color for that pixel.
In an RGB image, each pixel is given a specific RGB (red, green, and blue) value. But in an indexed color image, each pixel is given a number from zero to 255. For example, a pixel might be given the number 47. And, embedded in the image is a color lookup table (CLUT) that matches the number to a color value.
The RGB color-value is much larger, compared to the index used by an indexed color image. An RGB value contains 24 bits; an RGBA value contains 32 bits. The main advantage of true color images is the availability of an unlimited amount of colors.

Generally, whenever an index exists, that index is necessary for being able to find a record within a record series. Indexes permit a user to input some piece of information (such as the name of an individual) and see all other information about the relevant file, such as the case number or date.
