Upon assignment of the exercise notice, the writer of the index option has the obligation to pay a cash amount. Settlement and the resulting transfer of cash generally occur on the next business day after exercise.
When trading Equity Index futures, there are two types of settlement: daily and final. Daily settlement refers to the contracts settlement price on a daily basis while final settlement represents the final value of the contract at expiration.
Exercise settlement is cash settled by debiting/ crediting of the clearing accounts of the relevant Clearing Members with the respective Clearing Bank. Final settlement loss/ profit amount for option contracts on Index is debited/ credited to the relevant CMs clearing bank account on T+1 day (T = expiry day).
Settlement of Option Exercise: End-of-Month SP 500 Index options are PM-settled. The exercise-settlement value is calculated using the last (closing) reported sales price in the primary market of each component stock on the last business day (the expiration date) of the month.
Equity Index products normally close and settle 15 minutes after the daily close of trading in cash equities. The cash/futures basis may be affected to the extent that futures may fluctuate, sometimes sharply, during those final 15 minutes.
They are settled in cash on a daily basis, which means that investors and traders pay or collect the difference in value daily. Index futures can be used for a few reasons, often by traders speculating on how the index or market will move, or by investors looking to hedge their position against potential future losses.
The exercise-settlement value, SET, is calculated using the opening sales price in the primary market of each component security on the expiration date. The exercise-settlement amount is equal to the difference between the exercise-settlement value and the exercise price of the option, multiplied by $100.
Cash settled means no other requirements. Examples of cash settled index options that you can trade are SP 500 Index (SPX), Nasdaq 100 Index (NDX), Russell 2000 Index (RUT), Volatility Index (VIX), Dow Jones Index (DJX), SP 100 Index (OEX), and the SP 500 Mini Index (XSP).
