This is Mr. Zip. He revolutionized the mail delivery system of the United States with his ZIP Code. The heart of the system is a number a ZIP Code number. Lets break this one down and see how it works. Each of these five numbers plays an important role. The country is divided into ten sections, and the first number represents one of these sections. In this case, the six stands for part of the Midwest. The next two numbers narrow it down. For instance, the oh six pinpoints Chicago. And the last two numbers? They indicate a final stop before delivery a local post office. And here it is, the Elmwood Park branch of Chicago, our thirty five. Its that simple. Call your post office with the ZIP Code numbers you need, and use them here and here for the fastest possible mail delivery. Remember, only you can put ZIP in your postal system.

It is preferred that all City, State, and ZIP Code information be on a single line. If that is not possible, the ZIP Code, including the ZIP+4 Code, may be placed below the city/state information.
The recipients address Heres how to complete their information: Place the recipients name on the first line. On the second line, write the building number and street name. Include the city, state and ZIP code on the final line.
A letter or parcel without a zip code is highly likely to never docHub its intended destination. This is because of how the US Postal Services automated systems process residential addresses. Heres what we mean: USPS systems read addresses from the bottom up.
Addresses (ZIP code present) USPS abbreviations are used for both the street address and state, and there is no punctuation in the lines for the street address or city, state and ZIP code. Write to Paul and Mary Moore, 1313 E Main St, Portage MI 49024-2001.
ZIP Codes are an integral part of making sure your mailpiece is processed quickly and efficiently. Not having a ZIP Code on your mail causes unnecessary delay because it will require manual look-up.
Since our caller works for the U.S. government, and ZIP codes are a government thing, I checked the US Printing Office style guide first. It recommends ZIP Code. Associated Press style is similar: ZIP codetwo words with ZIP in all capsbut it uses a lowercase C, and I was surprised it would deviate.
A letter without a ZIP code may not docHub its intended destination. That is because of the way addresses are read by automated postal systems. Rules that are taken for granted when people send mail are actually unusually strict to increase post office efficiency. Processing machines read addresses from the bottom up.
When we are writing zip codes for the U.S. mail, the postal service prefers that punctuation not be used. It also prefers that lettering be in all CAPS; the address be printed on the center of the envelope with a flush left margin; and the + 4 number be included.
Postal codes used in the United Kingdom, British Overseas Territories and Crown dependencies are known as postcodes (originally, postal codes). They are alphanumeric and were adopted nationally between 11 October 1959 and 1974, having been devised by the General Post Office (Royal Mail).
UK postcodes consist of 5-7 alphanumeric characters, and are separated into two parts by a single space. The first part is the outward code, and it specifies an area and district of the UK. This is followed by a space and the inward code.
