- [David] Hello, readers. Today were going to talk about how to use text features to find information in a piece of nonfiction writing like a textbook, an encyclopedia entry or a news article. Information in these texts is organized with a specific purpose in mind. The author wants you to be able to read the text features like a map so you can find the information that you need. So the first text feature I wanna talk about today is the title and thats just the name at the top of a piece of writing. And its purpose is to tell you really what youre about to read. Let me give you an example. We can see this article here, this text in yellow, this is the title and it says, All about Pets. What does that tell us about the content of this writing? Its gonna be all about pets. Now below it, in green, you can see three examples of the next kind of text feature that I wanna talk about, which are called headings. There are five key elements to every story: plot, setting, characters, point of view, and conflict.
So those are the four types of informative writing. Literary nonfiction, which tends to be shorter writing; expository writing, which has written cues that make it easier for readers to scan information; argumentative or persuasive writing, which advocates a point of view; and procedural writing, a step-by-step guide.
Structure and organization of texts help readers understand whats most important by grouping related information together. Headings, subheadings, chapter titles, highlighted vocabularyall of these features guide readers to find and remember the most important information.
Common examples of informational text include: newspapers. online articles. informational brochures. encyclopedias. scholarly journals. textbooks. event flyers. class syllabi.
When discussing reading comprehension, think of details as the individual features, facts or particulars in the text. These details are essential to develop reading comprehension. For instance, in the popular fairy tale Cinderella, imagine if you missed the detail of the lost glass slipper.
Vocabulary. Main Idea: The topic or big idea that an informational text is written about. Key Details: Important pieces of information that support the main idea of a text.
The main idea is the most important piece of information the author wants you to know about the concept of that paragraph.
Look at the title of the text, as well as any pictures or headings included. Read the first and last sentence of the passage. Note any words or phrases that are repeated throughout the text. Summarize the text as best you can in one sentence.
