Select all of the cells that you want to be formatted with this date format. Open the Format Cells Dialogue Box by right clicking in the selection and choosing Format Cells. Select the Number tab, and Custom. In the Type: line, enter dd-mmm-yy as below and click OK.

To insert the current date using a keyboard shorcut, press Alt + Shift + D to insert the Date field in a content control. This will insert the Date field which will update automatically. This is not a shortcut for the Date / Time dialog box and is not affected by settings in the dialog box.
The format of the date cannot be changed directly in the header or footer. It can only be changed to another short date format by changing the default Windows regional settings, an inconvenient process.
Insert a date that updates automatically On the Insert tab, in the Text group, click Date Time. In the Date and time dialog box, select the format you want. Select the Update automatically check box. The date is inserted as a field and will update automatically.
Insert the date in a footer in Excel Click Insert Header Footer. Scroll down to the bottom of the worksheet. Click on the left, center, or right footer box at the bottom of the worksheet. Click Design Current Date. To exit the footer view, click anywhere in the worksheet, and then click View Normal.
On the Insert menu, click Header and Footer. In the Header or Footer sections, click in the Left, Center, or Right sections, depending on where you want the date or time to appear.
Insert a Date and Time Field Click the Insert tab. Click the Date and Time button. Select a date format. Check the Update automatically check box. If the Update automatically check box isnt checked, the date will be inserted as static text. Click OK.
