You can choose between footnotes and endnotes, numbering format, custom marks and symbols, a starting number, and whether to apply the numbering to the whole document.
Insert footnotes and endnotes Click where you want to reference to the footnote or endnote. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote.
