With the blank document open, go first to Layout. Then, on the Margins dropdown menu, select Normal for 1-inch margins on all sides, top, bottom, left, and right. Next, lets set alignment and line spacing by clicking on the Home tab. Then in the Paragraph grouping, select Align Left. Move your cursor over to the spacing tools dropdown menu and select 2.0 for double spacing. Now lets set our indentation for the first line of a paragraph. The number of note references in a sentence or a paragraph can sometimes be reduced by grouping several citations in a single note. The citations are separated by semicolons and must appear in the same order as the text material (whether works, quotations, or whatever) to which they pertain.
Ibid is short for the Latin ibidem, which means in the same place. If youre referencing the same source but different page, follow Ibid with a comma and the new page number(s).
The pinpoint reference should not be repeated. If you refer to the same source as in the immediately preceding footnote but to a different page or section, use ibid followed by the pinpoint reference, that is, the different page or section number.

You can only have one footnote with a given reference number on a page. If citations are consistently placed in notes, then a repeated citation would require a new note. Note numbers are not reused in an essay in MLA style; instead, notes are numbered consecutively, as recommended by The Chicago Manual of Style (Sequencing of Note Numbers).
