In 1946, the Baltimore franchise was nicknamed Bullets after a nearby ammunition foundry. Though the team disbanded, the Chicago Packers -- who later became the Chicago Zephyrs -- relocated to Baltimore, and in 1963, the Bullets nickname returned.
On November 27, 1954, the team folded with a 311 record on the season, making the Bullets the last NBA franchise to fold. Out of all defunct NBA teams, the Bullets were members of the association for the longest time and the only defunct team to win a championship.
In November 1995, owner Abe Pollin announced he was changing the teams nickname, because Bullets had acquired violent overtones that had made him increasingly uncomfortable over the years, particularly given the high homicide and crime rate in the early 1990s in Washington, D.C.
