Tables and graphs are visual representations of data used to organise information to show patterns and relationships. Researchers and scientists often use tables and graphs to report findings from their research.
Labelling Tables and Figures Tables and figures must all be labelled with numbered captions that clearly identify and describe them. Figure captions are generally placed below the figures, while table captions must be placed above the tables.
Table titles help readers understand the connection between tables and the rest of the document. They can also make tables easier to understand when viewed by themselves. Due to these important functions, all our primary style guides offer detailed guidelines for how to write table titles.
To change the table name: Select any cell in the table. On the Ribbon, under the Table Tools tab, click the Design tab. At the far left of the Ribbon, click in the Table name box, to select the existing name. Then, type a new name, such as Orders, and press the Enter key.
Tables should be: Labeled with the table number and descriptive title above the table. Labeled with column and/or row labels that describe the data, including units of measurement. Set apart from the text itself; text does not flow around the table.
The title should be a concise description of what is being graphed (e. g., Pressure as a Function of Temperature for Nitrogen). Usually you do not need to describe in the title the units used in the graph, but there are some instances where this is necessary.
How to Name a Graph: Tips for Writing Great Chart Captions Summarize Your Data in Plain English. Left Justify Chart Captions Below Figure. Keep Chart Captions Simple and Short. Simplify Your Information. Include Units of Representation. Dont Forget Time Period!
include column headings and their respective units. include a meaningful, but short description of the column headings, any formulae that were used (if not presented in the table itself), and any other information to interpret the table. the title should never begin with the words Table of
The title should concisely tell the reader what is in the graph. Avoid the obvious use of vs. or versus or the word plotted in the title. Graphs that will appear as a figure in a publication or in a formal laboratory report will not have a title (the information is given in the figure caption).
Tables should be labeled with a number preceding the table title; tables and figures are labeled independently of one another. Tables should also have lines demarcating different parts of the table (title, column headers, data, and footnotes if present). Gridlines or boxes should not be included in printed versions.
