An aeronautical chart is the road map for a pilot flying under VFR. The chart provides information which allows pilots to track their position and provides available information which enhances safety.
Aeronautical charts provide essential data for the pilot and air navigator. They are, in effect, small-scale topographic maps on which current information on aids to navigation have been superimposed.
Sectional charts are navigational aids that pilots use to identify terrain, airports, and obstruction. Unlike maps which display topographical information, aeronautical charts also display airspace information, information on various types of airspace, and radio frequencies.
The aeronautical information includes visual and radio aids to navigation, airports, controlled airspace, special-use airspace, obstructions, and related data. The topographic information consists of contour lines, shaded relief, drainage patterns, and a selection of landmarks used for flight under VFR.
Terminal charts give pilots more information about the busy areas in and around Class B airspace. They have the same types of information as sectional charts but offer even more details, especially about airspace, airports, obstructions, terrain, and visual checkpoints.
Sectional charts are in 1:500,000 scale and are named for a city on the map. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States publishes over 50 charts covering the continental United States, Alaska, and Hawaii.
