When using either type of footnote, insert a number formatted in superscript following almost any punctuation mark. Footnote numbers should not follow dashes ( ), and if they appear in a sentence in parentheses, the footnote number should be inserted within the parentheses.
To adjust the settings of your footnote, including the numbering style, when to start and stop the numbering of your notes, etc., click on the Expand icon in the Footnotes Group of the References Ribbon. You can have your footnotes and endnotes restart their numbering in each chapter.
How to Do Chicago Style Footnotes in Word Place your cursor in the body text where you want the footnote superscript to appear. Select the References tab in the ribbon toolbar. Select Chicago on the Style dropdown menu in the Citations and Bibliography section. Click Insert Footnote.
The footnote citation at the bottom of the page should have the number, and it should also be in superscript. For the note itself, use the same font as the rest of your paper but in a smaller size. For example, if your paper is written in 12 pt. font, then your footnote should be in 10 pt.
On the Insert menu, click Footnote. Under Format, on the Number format pop-up menu, click the option that you want, and then click Apply.
Chicago Style Format for Papers | Requirements Examples Use a standard font like 12 pt. Times New Roman. Double-space the text. Use 1 inch margins or larger. Indent new paragraphs by inch. Place page numbers in the top right or bottom center.
Typography. The Chicago Manual of Style does not specify a specific font type and size. A Manual for Writers by Kate Turabian suggests using either 12-point Times New Roman font or 10-point Arial font.
If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on). For even more formatting options, click the Format button in the lower-left corner.
The preferred method is to use the same font and font size as your text (12 pt font Times New Roman) Footnotes should be placed at the end of all punctuation except the dash.
Ensure Word is using the Chicago Footnote style (or other appropriate footnote style) In Word, change to the EndNote tab and, from the Style drop-down, select Chicago 16th Footnote as the style. Insert a footnote using Word. Insert the citation into the footnote. Adding page numbers to your citation.
