Form-based authentication is a protection mechanism for web-based resources in which attempts to access a resource are first redirected to a web page that requires that the user supply valid authentication credentials in order to proceed.

Forms authentication uses an HTML form to send the users credentials to the server. It is not an Internet standard. Forms authentication is only appropriate for web APIs that are called from a web application, so that the user can interact with the HTML form.
For Internet Explorer and Chrome browser Navigate through Menu bar to Tools - Internet Options - Security. Select Local Intranet and Click on Custom Level button. Scroll to bottom of the window to User Authentication section, select Prompt for user name and password Click Ok, Apply and Ok to save changes.
Windows as discussed in the preceding tutorial, when an application uses Windows authentication it is the web servers responsibility to authenticate the visitor, and this is usually done through Basic, Digest, or Integrated Windows authentication. Forms users are authenticated via a form on a web page.
Form-Based Authentication A client requests access to a protected resource. If the client is unauthenticated, the server redirects the client to a login page. The client submits the login form to the server. The server attempts to authenticate the user.
The basic authentication (direct basic) will be used by a server to server communication and the form authentication will be used by a user through a web application. This works fine until the customer directly access a secure page, in that scenario an basic authentication popup will be shown in the browser.
