In both MLA and APA, a footnote example includes the citation found at the bottom, or foot, of the page corresponding to the superscript number found in the body of the work. The footnote might consist of the type of work and authors name along with other information related to the type of citation.
Footnotes and Bibliography The Chicago citation style is the method established by the University of Chicago Press for documenting sources used in a research paper and is probably the most commonly used footnote format.
A footnote is a type of in-text citation. The information in the text body is marked with a superscript number1 (raised number), and the corresponding source citation and note is at the bottom (or the foot) of the page the superscript appears on.
A complete footnote has the same information as the citation in the bibliography, with some differences in format, plus the page number of a particular quotation. An abbreviated footnote contains the authors last name, a brief title, and the page number of the quotation.
A number in superscript format, placed in the text of the essay, indicates the relevant footnote. Citations are numbered sequentially in the order in which they appear in the text and each citation corresponds to a numbered footnote containing publication information about the source cited.
To insert a footnote automatically in a Word document: Click on the point in the text where the footnote should appear. Select the References tab at the top and then click on Insert Footnote Type the text you want into the footnote that appears at the bottom of the page.
APA Style requires you to use APA in-text citations, not footnotes, to cite sources. However, you can use APA footnotes sparingly for two purposes: Giving additional information. Providing copyright attribution.
The footnote contains the number of the citation followed by a period and then the citation itself. The citation always includes the authors name and the title of the text, and it always ends with a period. Full notes also include all the relevant publication information in parentheses (which varies by source type).
