The Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is the provinces official high school diploma. To earn a high school diploma, you need to earn 30 secondary school credits. English programs are offered in English in English-language schools and French programs are offered in French-language schools.
Upon completion of Grade 12, a student is awarded high school diploma which makes them eligible for post-secondary education (college and university). If foreign national aspires to attend college or university in Canada, they should be able to demonstrate that they possess a high school diploma.
For the 2022-2023 school year, diploma exams will only count towards 20% of students final grades. The weighting of diploma exams will return to 30% effective September 1, 2023.
A1. Students and their parents will decide whether the student would like to write their diploma exam. If the diploma exam is not written, an exemption will be provided. To receive an exemption, students need to be currently taking the course and receive a school-awarded mark during the 2020/21 school year.
Mature students are eligible to receive the Alberta High School Diploma or the Certificate of High School Achievement.
In the U.S., there are colleges that specialize in associate degrees and allow students to continue to a four-year college to complete a degree.
