There is a long list of reasons that one or all of the brakes on your vehicle might lock up. These can include an overheated braking system, using the wrong brake fluid, damaged or broken parts (calipers, brake pads, pistons, rotors, or others), a defective ABS component, broken parking brake, and more.
Your parking brake is stuck due to rust or corrosion. Over time, the parking brake can become rusty or corroded. Once this happens, the cable that engages the parking brake can get stuck. This can be a harder problem to diagnose and fix in your driveway or garage.
The most common causes of your brakes not releasing is a seized caliper or brake pad. This typically occurs due to rusting or ageing. Typically, you will notice your vehicle pulling to one side when you press down on your brakes.
First, let your engine run for a bit. As your engine gets warmer, it should cause any ice to melt, which will allow you to disengage your handbrake. You can speed the process a little by gently revving your engine, while attempting to disengage your handbrake several times could break up any remaining ice.
Take your foot off the brake pedal so your wheels can get enough traction to possibly unlock momentarily. Then reapply pressure to the brake if needed. Repeatedly (and quickly) press the brakes over and over until the brakes either disengage or bring you to a safe stop.
Common reasons for this to happen: Corroded Parking Brake Cable: Parking brake cables are subject to rust and damage. Theyre exposed to the elements, and even a little bit of corrosion can be enough to cause your parking brake to not disengage.
One of the most common causes of a jammed parking brake is that of rust or corrosion. Water and dirt cause cables to erode which then can cause either your brakes to fail, your brake pads to stick to your wheels, or your cables to snap.
Drag in vehicles. While you are driving your car, if you notice it feels sluggish or is dragging, there may be a problem with the parking brake. This could be the parking brake drum, the parking brake release cable, or both depending on the severity of the issue.
With the AUTO switch OFF, the EPB can be applied by pushing and holding the parking brake switch. This will work with the ignition switch ON or OFF and with the vehicle moving or stationary. To release the brake, pull and hold the manual switch while at the same time pressing the brake pedal.
