In this video I want to give you an example of what it means to fit data to a line. Instead of doing my traditional video using my little pen tablet, Im going to do it straight on Excel so you could see how to do this for yourself, so if you have Excel or some other type of a spreadsheet program. Were not going to go into the math of it. I really just want you to get the conceptual understanding of what it means to fit data with line, or do a linear regression. So here, lets just read the problem. The following table shows the median California income-- remember median is the middle, the middle California income --from 1995 to 2002 as reported by the U.S. Census Bureau. Draw a scatter plot and find the equation. What would you expect the median annual income of a California family to be in the year 2010? What are the meanings of the slope and the y-intercept of this problem? So the first thing youd want to do-- I just copied and pasted this image --we have to get the data in a for

For all possible lines, calculate the sum of squares of errors. The line which has the least sum of squares of errors is the best fit line.
In a fit line, the data points are fitted to a line that usually does not pass through all of the data points. The fit line represents the trend of the data. Some fits lines are regression based. Others are based on iterative weighted least squares.
This is also known as a correlation. A line of best fit is a straight line that best represents the data on a scatter plot. This line may pass through some of the points, none of the points, or all of the points. Try to have the line as close as possible to all points, and as many points above the line as below.
You should notice that the trendline is the best line that fits through the points. It may or may not actually pass through any particular points. Thats why another name for trendline is best-fit line.
The equation of a line of fit is y=mx+b y = m x + b , where m is the slope found in step 2 and b is the y-intercept found in step 3.
A well-fitting regression model results in predicted values close to the observed data values. The mean model, which uses the mean for every predicted value, generally would be used if there were no informative predictor variables.
This is also known as a correlation. A line of best fit is a straight line that best represents the data on a scatter plot. This line may pass through some of the points, none of the points, or all of the points. Try to have the line as close as possible to all points, and as many points above the line as below.
When choosing a linear model, these are factors to keep in mind: Only compare linear models for the same dataset. Find a model with a high adjusted R2. Make sure this model has equally distributed residuals around zero. Make sure the errors of this model are within a small bandwidth.
For all possible lines, calculate the sum of squares of errors. The line which has the least sum of squares of errors is the best fit line.
When a linear relationship exists between the two variables plotted a best fit line can be drawn. The best fit line should pass as close to all of the points as possible but does not necessarily have to pass through any of them. The volume of a liquid sample and its mass are linearly related.
