With the blank document open, go first to Layout. Then, on the Margins dropdown menu, select Normal for 1-inch margins on all sides, top, bottom, left, and right. Next, lets set alignment and line spacing by clicking on the Home tab. Then in the Paragraph grouping, select Align Left. Move your cursor over to the spacing tools dropdown menu and select 2.0 for double spacing. Now lets set our indentation for the first line of a paragraph. Click on the Paragraph dialog box launcher arrow. In the box that appears, under Special select First Line and make sure the number is 0.5 or half inch. Click the References tab. Click the Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote button. A reference number is placed in the text, and a new footnote or endnote is created. Your text cursor is moved to the footnote or endnote, so you can type out your reference.
If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on). For even more formatting options, click the Format button in the lower-left corner.
Making the Alignment Click the Home tab if it isnt already enabled. Click the Align Text Left button in the Paragraph section of the ribbon. Note that Word doesnt have a way to mass-realign footnotes.
Shrink text to fit In the Quick Access toolbar at the top of the Word window, click Customize Quick Access Toolbar (the small down arrow) and choose More Commands. Under Choose commands from, click All Commands. Scroll down through the list of commands until you find Shrink One Page.
Use the Footnotes pull-down menu and select Footnotes Separator. Then Right Click on the bar and choose Paragraph from the contextual menu that displays. Check/adjust the Spacing Before and After settings for the Footnote Separator in this dialog where I have highlighted.
To keep the footnote together in Word: Press Ctrl+Shift+S to Apply Styles. Footnote Text. Click Modify. Click Format. Select Paragraph. Under Line and Page Breaks tab. Check box by Keep lines together. Click OK.
Next, click References tab. And click Show Note. Now a horizontal pane will display at the bottom of the screen. Select the Footnote Separator and you can remove the unnecessary paragraph marks.
Footnotes/endnotes are double spaced, and the first line only is indented from the left margin. In addition to footnotes/endnotes, your paper will also have a bibliography: a list of all of the sources you cited in your paper, arranged in alphabetical order by last name of each author.
Find the Footnote Text style from the Styles drop down, right click on this style and left click Modify. 5. You will find the line spacing settings near the middle of the Modify Style window. Be sure to choose the Single Space icon and then press OK.
You can insert the footnote marker\footnotemark{} using the \verb|\footnotemark| command and later use the \verb|\footnotetext| command to typeset the footnote text by writing \verb|\footnotetext{Text of second footnote.}| \footnotetext{Text of second footnote.}.
