Lustre is in between matte and glossy in both shine and texture. It is moderately textured and has some shine to it. It does not show fingerprints or smudges as easily as glossy, but it does not have the durability of a matte finish. While glossy finishes highlight contrasts making sharper images, luster subdues them.
glossy is because it's much harder to make lustre dirty. Lustre doesn't hold fingerprints. But, the paper still keeps a bit of a shiny finish, so it isn't totally flat. Lustre is great for photographs that won't be stored in glass and will be frequently handled.
Matte. A matte finish means that the photo doesn't have any shine, making it a great option for photos you want to display in a glass frame or in brighter areas. Because light doesn't bounce off this finish, there isn't as much of a glare, which can be beneficial in calmer areas like living rooms or doctors' offices.
Lustre —or luster— paper is a semi-shiny, slightly pebbled-textured photo paper that combines the durability and softness of matte paper with the shine and contrast of glossy paper. It provides a very professional look with excellent color and detail without reflecting too much light.
The bottom line for glossy vs matte photos is that glossy is better when you won't be framing behind glass and when your photos have lots of contrast or vibrant colors. Matte is better for classic black and white photos that need to last and might be displayed in a gallery.
If you are planning on displaying your photo prints behind glass, a matte finish is definitely the best choice. Not only will matte photos not stick to the glass of photo frame, but they will also reflect less light, making them much more enjoyable to look at.
A pearl finish, sometimes referred to as luster, is a good balance of both matte and semi-shine. Known for having an almost iridescent quality, pearl finishes allow for some shine and contrast but don't show blemishes as easily as glossier options.
Professional photographers use photo paper with a matte finish as it doesn't reflect light like glossy finishes. Pros prefer to have the final image viewed without the distraction of glare from the paper. And as many pro photographers frame their photos behind glass, a matte finish is best for this display style.
Lustre has a slight gloss, while matte does not. Both matte and lustre finishes work well on portraits, wedding photos, or professional prints. Unlike glossy prints, both finishes look good under glass, as they are not reflective. Yet, photographers consider a lustre finish more professional, as it boosts the colors.
Lustre and metallic finishes are both used by professional photographers. Choosing between a lustre or a metallic print comes down to personal preference. Both provide vibrant colors and high-quality photos. If you want to hang up a photo in your home, we suggest the metallic finish.
