hi im phil steele should you shoot your photos in the raw file format or the jpeg format now there are some photography teachers who would have you believe that you should always shoot raw and that jpegs are strictly for amateurs but nothing could be further from the truth the fact is there are some situations where raw is better and some situations where jpeg is better and its important that you understand the difference so in this video were going to look at the advantages and disadvantages of raw and jpeg well clearly define which situations call for which file type and will finally lay this old myth to rest [Music] i have a confession to make i shoot jpeg more often than i shoot raw now according to some arrogant photography teachers out there this brands me as an amateur but the fact is most of the photography that i do is more suitable to jpegs the choice of raw or jpeg is less about your level of photography expertise than it is about the kind of photos youre taking and wh

With JPEG files, the white balance is already balanced. This is a big reason why JPEGs look more finished than their RAW counterparts straight off the camera. A change you can make in a one-step increment in Lightroom, like white balance, you can only make in a five-step increment with JPEGs, Morrison points out.
Its because of the extended dynamic range contained within them. Dynamic range is the amount of tonal range detail in the shot. That means the detail in the darkest shadows or brightest highlights. Because the RAW photo retains much more of this detail, the images look dull, almost grey, before editing.
Most professional photography is shot in raw. This format gives the most flexibility when editing photos later. Professional photojournalists and sports photographers may shoot in JPEG when they send images directly from their camera to a news outlet. They do not have time to post-process the pictures.
Raw has more options for correcting exposure issues With a JPEG, white balance is applied by the camera, and there are fewer options to modify it in post-processing. With a raw file, you have complete control over white balance when editing the image. Lost detail in overexposed highlights cannot be recovered in a JPEG.
Convert your file Open the photos in RAW format, e.g. in Photoshop. Go to File and choose Save As and select from the list . jpg (it might appear as JPEG).
RAW files are exactly that - raw camera data. There is no sharpening or colour / tonal correction applied. If you choose to save JPEGs on your camera, the camera software will introduce basic sharpening and general colour/ tonal enhancements to the jpg before saving it.
No compression or processing is applied to a RAW file by the camera. In contrast, a JPEG file is a file that your camera has compressed and does not contain all of the information your cameras sensor recorded during exposure.
You can easily improve the quality of a JPEG photo by fine-tuning the images appearance, color, and contrast with a photo editor such as Pixlr or Photoshop. If you have a Windows computer, you can use built-in apps such as Paint and Photos to increase picture quality.
There isnt a great deal of difference between the two, but the JPEG is sharper than the RAW file. This is understandable as the in-camera processing has sharpened the JPEG image whilst the RAW file doesnt have any sharpening.
