GIF, in full graphics interchange format, digital file format devised in 1987 by the Internet service provider CompuServe as a means of reducing the size of images and short animations.
GIF has only two versions: The first version was introduced in 1987 as GIF87a. The second version was an extended version and came in existence in 1989. It was called GIF89a and it is used until today as the standard format.
GIF (stands for Graphics Interchange Format) was developed in the late 1980s and it is still widely used. PNG (Portable Network Graphics) was developed around 1995, became a W3C recommendation in 1996, and has been widely implemented in most Web browsers as soon as 1998.
If your GIF file is not playing or looping, it might be because the file is too large. If its more than 1080 pixels high or 1920 pixels wide, youll need to reduce the size. There are a number of free, online tools of varying sophistication that you can use.
The main reason why your GIFs load so slowly is likely because you have too many frames in the GIF.
There are technically two types of GIF file: the GIF87a and the newer, improved GIF89a. Both are fully supported on most browsers, and both use . gif as their file name suffix. GIF87a is the original format for indexed color images.
The GIF file format has a hard-coded limitation of 256 colors, so when you save or convert as GIF, it has an unavoidable loss of quality to the photo. If you want to save it in high quality, we recommend saving an image in video format.
GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. GIF is a raster file format designed for relatively basic images that appear mainly on the internet. Each file can support up to 8 bits per pixel and can contain 256 indexed colors.
