1) JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is an ISO/IEC group of experts that develops and maintains standards for a suite of compression algorithms for computer image files. 2) JPEG (usually pronounced JAY-pehg) is also a term for any graphic image file produced by using a JPEG standard.
The YCbCr color model is well suited for digital imaging scenarios because it can take advantage of certain aspects of the human visual system. In particular, humans are more sensitive to changes in the luminance (brightness) of an image and less sensitive to chrominance (color).
The amount of JPEG compression is typically measured as a percentage of the quality level. An image at 100% quality has (almost) no loss, and 1% quality is a very low quality image. In general, quality levels of 90% or higher are considered high quality, 80%-90% is medium quality, and 70%-80% is low quality.
JPEG files usually have a filename extension of jpg or jpeg. JPEG/JFIF supports a maximum image size of 65,53565,535 pixels, hence up to 4 gigapixels for an aspect ratio of 1:1.
As a general benchmark: 90% JPEG quality gives a very high-quality image while gaining a docHub reduction on the original 100% file size. 80% JPEG quality gives a greater file size reduction with almost no loss in quality.
Some photographers just set the quality slider to 100. This will definitely provide the highest quality export. However, the exported JPG will approach the size of the original RAW file. Very large!
jpeg 100 has a compression ratio of 2.6:1. The compression method is usually lossy, meaning that some original image information is lost and cannot be restored, possibly affecting image quality. There is an optional lossless mode defined in the JPEG standard; however, this mode is not widely supported in products.
The best compression ratio to retain image quality is 10:1. If youre looking to reduce the file size of your photographs while keeping image quality, this is the maximum compression ratio you want to shoot for.
In Illustrator export options for JPG format are JPG 100, JPG 80, JPG 50, and JPG 20. These numbers 100, 80. 50, 20 are the quality of the JPG image. For example, if you select 100 your JPG output will be the least compression and gives you a higher quality image.
