Answer. If your certificate is exported with Base64 encoding, then rename the extension . cer to . pem .
CER files are security files provided and generated by an Certificate Authority. These files help a browser to verify if a website is secure and save to enter, verifying its authenticity. These CER security certificates are usually installed on a web server.
cert (or . cer or . crt ) file usually contains a single certificate, alone and without any wrapping (no private key, no password protection, just the certificate). Follow this answer to receive notifications. edited Mar 18, 2022 at 23:52.
A . pem file is a container format that may just include the public certificate or the entire certificate chain (private key, public key, root certificates): Private Key. Server Certificate (crt, puplic key)
cer just stands for certificate. It is normally DER encoded data, but Windows may also accept PEM encoded data. You need to take a look at the content (e.g. using the file utility on posix systems) to see what is within the file to be 100% sure.
Use the following commands to convert a DER-encoded .cer file to a .pem format: Syntax: openssl x509 -inform DER -in -out openssl x509 -in -out -outform PEM. Example:
key files are generally the private key, used by the server to encrypt and package data for verification by clients. . pem files are generally the public key, used by the client to verify and decrypt data sent by servers.
CER files: CER file is used to store X. 509 certificate. Normally used for SSL certification to verify and identify web servers security. The file contains information about certificate owner and public key.
Note: The PEM format is the most common format used for certificates. Extensions used for PEM certificates are cer, crt, and pem. They are Base64 encoded ASCII files. The DER format is the binary form of the certificate.
You dont need to CONVERT the files! Copy and paste your file (to retain your original file) ie: 35544arrtsfevctdtys767.crt to 35544arrtsfevctdtys767-copy.crt. Rename your COPIED file (35544arrtsfevctdtys767-copy. crt) to name-of-your- choice. TXT i.e. abc. You now have the TEXT version of your file
