The difference between Base64 and hex is really just how bytes are represented. Hex is another way of saying "Base16". Hex will take two characters for each byte - Base64 takes 4 characters for every 3 bytes, so it's more efficient than hex.
You were told or you thought that the Base64 is an encryption algorithm? Achtung! This is not only erroneous, but also very dangerous, because Base64 is just an encoding algorithm that does not protect sensitive data in any way.
Encoded size increase This means that the Base64 version of a string or file will be at least 133% the size of its source (a ~33% increase). The increase may be larger if the encoded data is small.
Although Base64 is a relatively efficient way of encoding binary data it will, on average still increase the file size for more than 25%. This not only increases your bandwidth bill, but also increases the download time.
Fundamentally, Base64 is used to encode binary data as printable text. This allows you to transport binary over protocols or mediums that cannot handle binary data formats and require simple text. [ Download now: A sysadmin's guide to Bash scripting. ] Base64 uses 6-bit characters grouped into 24-bit sequences.
Base64 and MD5 are not encryption methods. Base64 is simply a way of encoding characters, which provides absolutely no security - it is as good as storing the password in plain text. MD5 is a hash function, which means it is one-way and cannot be decrypted.
Base64 is not an encryption, it is an encoding. It's role is to make sure the password can be stored in the database nicely and special characters aren't a problem. It does nothing to protect the password. From security standpoint, it is exactly the same as storing it without any encoding.
Although Base64 is a relatively efficient way of encoding binary data it will, on average still increase the file size for more than 25%. This not only increases your bandwidth bill, but also increases the download time.
Base64 Encoding Example A Base64 encoder starts by chunking the binary stream into groupings of six characters: 100110 111010 001011 101001. Each of these groupings translates into the numbers 38, 58, 11, and 41.
This is because base64 is very compact compared to other transfer-safe encoding schemes. For example, Hex encoding encodes each byte as a pair of Hex characters. This means that each byte of data would become two bytes after encoding.
